On December 4-5, 2009, a food drive was held by the York Masonic Lodge of West Kennebunk, assisted by members of the W. Kennebunk Fire Department and the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church. This was the Lodge's first attempt at running a food drive for YCFR and the results were very good. Over the 2 days, approximately 3 bins of food were collected as was almost $300 in cash donations. This, in spite of the weather on Saturday which saw Southern Maine get hit with the first snowfall of the winter season.
Hats off to the hardy volunteers from the Lodge, led by Steve Michael, and several students from the University of New England. Special thanks go out to the Fire Department who had one of their trucks on site, much to the enjoyment of the kids that stopped by with the adults in their group.
Everyone involved felt that this event went so well that the Lodge has booked next year's event already, planning to hold it once again on the first weekend in December, 2010, to coincide with Prelude in Kennebunkport. Ideas of how to improve the result were shared by all involved, and include some in-town signage as well as earlier publicity and a downtown collection site.
